Mallorca

Mallorca in latin means the main island and later Maiorica or the Major Island. It’s the biggest island in the Balearic archipielago. This group of islands are the eastern most territory in Spain. Together with Menorca and Ibiza it’s a very important tourist destination covering a area of 3.623 Sq/km and has population density of 207,8 persons per Sq/Km.

The capital of the island and as well as of the Balearic Island is Palma de Mallorca and it is know to the people living outside it simply as the “city”. The island of Cabrera is administered by the council of Palma.

Population

According to the 2004 census the island has 955.045 inhabitants. Of which little more than the half live in Palma de Mallorca with 368.974. The towns with the most habitants are Manacor 35.512, Inca 25.900, Llucmajor 28.591, Alcudia 15.057 and Soller 12.140. Since tourisem is the main industry on the island in summer the number of inhabitants increase.

Languages

The island has a typical mediterranien climate with high temperature in summer (+30 ºC) and moderatly low temperatures in winter. Rarelly falling below 5 ºC and as always the case on a island the humidity is very high.
